Labor Unions Emerge Page 67

what was left of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory after the burning.http://goo.gl/80Cg0
Based upon what I have read, labor unions were both good and bad because the positive side was that the workers got a chance to stand up for themselves and be heard, the downside is that it caused a negative reaction as stated in the reading the strikes turned violent.
"Industry and government responded forcefully to union activity which they saw as a threat to the entire capitalist sytem."- http://goo.gl/QOuVc
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was a sweatshop in which 146 seamstresses died because of the hazardous conditions they worked in. These deaths could have been prevented if they had more than just one fire escape, a sprinkler system and safer working conditions.

Monopolists did not want unions because they did not want to lose money or follow through with what the people were asking for.Union members did not like scabs because they were their replacements and they probably felt since they got workers fast what they were doing was not affecting the monopolists.

Many factory and sweatshop owners disliked the vision of unions like the IWW because they were socialist and industrial workers of the world. Also because they had a strike victory in 1912.

Hopelessly Bound to the Stake

"Behard Gillam drew this political cartoon for the Puck Press in 1883, depicting a workman chained to a stake"
-The Government did have some kind of responsibility for placing the workers on the stake by allowing them to work in treacherous conditions and permitting them to work for a major amount of hours to end up getting paid very little.

"This cartoon signifies the cruel treatment by the wealthy industrialists toward their workers. Laborers were forced to work fourteen to sixteen hour work days in order to fulfill their quota, they worked in unsafe conditions, and they were paid about $400-$500 a year, while living costs estimated $800 a year"
- This quote shows how the workers were underpaid, and worked in horrible conditions. Also how the bosses could care less about them.

Are The Old Bosses Still in Charge?

What is the setting for the cartoon?
This cartoon takes place in the Senate, which is part of the Legislative branch.(House of Representatives)
What entrance is open, and what entrance is closed?
The people's entrance is closed, while the monopolists door is wide open. This shows how the rich have more power and are more important than the workers.
Who do you think the large men at the back of the room represent?
I think the large men in the background  are special interest groups, the wealthy.
Why would the large men be in the room in the first place?
The reason the special interest groups are there is that they want to influence how the laws are written. They are looking after themselves.

"Americans see their leaders in Washington as overpaid agents of wealthy individuals and corporations who are largely disconnected from the concerns of average Americans."
