Labor Unions Emerge Page 67

what was left of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory after the burning.http://goo.gl/80Cg0
Based upon what I have read, labor unions were both good and bad because the positive side was that the workers got a chance to stand up for themselves and be heard, the downside is that it caused a negative reaction as stated in the reading the strikes turned violent.
"Industry and government responded forcefully to union activity which they saw as a threat to the entire capitalist sytem."- http://goo.gl/QOuVc
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was a sweatshop in which 146 seamstresses died because of the hazardous conditions they worked in. These deaths could have been prevented if they had more than just one fire escape, a sprinkler system and safer working conditions.

Monopolists did not want unions because they did not want to lose money or follow through with what the people were asking for.Union members did not like scabs because they were their replacements and they probably felt since they got workers fast what they were doing was not affecting the monopolists.

Many factory and sweatshop owners disliked the vision of unions like the IWW because they were socialist and industrial workers of the world. Also because they had a strike victory in 1912.

Hopelessly Bound to the Stake

"Behard Gillam drew this political cartoon for the Puck Press in 1883, depicting a workman chained to a stake"
-The Government did have some kind of responsibility for placing the workers on the stake by allowing them to work in treacherous conditions and permitting them to work for a major amount of hours to end up getting paid very little.

"This cartoon signifies the cruel treatment by the wealthy industrialists toward their workers. Laborers were forced to work fourteen to sixteen hour work days in order to fulfill their quota, they worked in unsafe conditions, and they were paid about $400-$500 a year, while living costs estimated $800 a year"
- This quote shows how the workers were underpaid, and worked in horrible conditions. Also how the bosses could care less about them.

Are The Old Bosses Still in Charge?

What is the setting for the cartoon?
This cartoon takes place in the Senate, which is part of the Legislative branch.(House of Representatives)
What entrance is open, and what entrance is closed?
The people's entrance is closed, while the monopolists door is wide open. This shows how the rich have more power and are more important than the workers.
Who do you think the large men at the back of the room represent?
I think the large men in the background  are special interest groups, the wealthy.
Why would the large men be in the room in the first place?
The reason the special interest groups are there is that they want to influence how the laws are written. They are looking after themselves.

"Americans see their leaders in Washington as overpaid agents of wealthy individuals and corporations who are largely disconnected from the concerns of average Americans."

Because of Electricity

Priority in
year Eighteen-seventy-six
Electricity

The haiku basically talks about how electricity was a priority. I put the picture of   Thomas Alva edison because he added innovations that made electricity safer and less expensive.By bringing electricty under conditions for effective use completely changed the nature of business in America.Electricity allow manufactures to establish plants or factories where ever they wanted. One of the most dramatic inventions as the telephone patented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.It particularly affected office work and creeated new jobs for women. The telephone opened many doors for world-wide communications.

Major Events before the Civil War'

Around 1858, the united States was divided geographically- north and south-with the South they wanted slavery well actually they depended on it for agriculture reasons and the North on the other hand wanted to abolish it and was more industrialized. They also differed in religions, cultural traditions, and climate. The country was so divided by the issue of slavery, California had to make a compromise in order to become a state. It was called The Compromise of 1850, to please Northerner's they admitted Cali as a free state and to please the South they proposed a new Fugitive Slave Law.
Around this time, many southern states were seriously considering a succesion which is the formal withdrawal of a state from the Union. Many people from the North hated slavery, so abolitionist developed a secret network , who hid fugitive slaves. Which later became known as underground railroad. When Uncle Tom's Cabin was published, a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe it showed the horrors of slavery and how they were sold. It stirred Northern abolitionist and increased their protest against slavery. And Southeners thought it critized them and saw it as an attack on the South.
Two politicians became famous for their slavery debates, Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.

Marijuana Legalization in Colorado and Washington

1. Cite exapmles of " Supreme Law of the Land".
"Marijuana is still illegal in the eyes of the federal government, which overrules states' rights."
2. Cite examples of "federal vs. state authority"
"federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug, so don't break out the Cheetos or goldfish too quickly."
3. What was the "compromise" that helped to pass the referendum in Washington? How do you think this compromise would affect demand for the product?

"Analysts had projected the Washington voters would approve their legalization ballot, because it proposes a heavy tax for marijuana that made the proposal attractive to budget hawks"

4. Why was Oregon's referendum not passed?

"Voters shot down a third legalization referendum, in Oregon, which was expected. Analysts had projected that it wouldn't go through and criticized various aspects of the initiative, especially the fact that it would have handed most of the regulating power in the marijuana industry to the growers rather than independent overseers."

Diary Entry #7

December 4,1819
Dear Diary,

Two days ago I suffered from a stroke, so I landed in the town's hospital. The room i'm in has very little furniture one medicine cabinet and five beds the matresses are so thin you can feel the bars under they seem to be giving me back aches, it has dim lights and the ceiling has cracks in it. In the night you always hear people well patients screaming and moaning in pain. Last night the person laying in the bed beside me died.

I have lived for 344 years and now my heart seems to be weak, the doctor told me even if i havent aged physically my heart has and seems to be weak he also said I only have a few hours to live. My life was worth living beacuse I had my husband, and my children who needed me. My years of living allowed me to learn many things, meet many people, I got a chance to travel and make my life in some new place.

I think that in about 200 years from now women will have rights and colored people will be able to vote or atleast I hope so. The land will probably be more urbanized, technology and medicine will probably advance.Im having trouble breathing so i'll end this before I take my last breathe.

Love,
 Aiyana  M.
( As Aiyana lays in bed the nurse walks in, Aiyana has trouble breathing and the nurse notices. the nurse walks toward the cabinet grabs a needle and some liquid. she walks toward her bed and as she injects her the nurse says " Don't worry i'll end youre suffering" and laughs. Aiyana scared tries to talk but cant her body seems to be getting numb and her heart started beating super fast" thud.thud.thud.thud.thud........thud........thud................. and then suddenly it stopped.)

Diary Entry #5

October of 1789
Dear Diary,

So today was a long day, my husband's friends came over today they sat all day talking about politics and stuff like that. Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson had very different political ideas. Alexander believed in a strong central government led by the upper-class citizens and Jefferson did not approve of strong central governments especiallly if led by the rich, he instead favored a strong state and local governments that are based on popular participation.
