Major Events before the Civil War'

Around 1858, the united States was divided geographically- north and south-with the South they wanted slavery well actually they depended on it for agriculture reasons and the North on the other hand wanted to abolish it and was more industrialized. They also differed in religions, cultural traditions, and climate. The country was so divided by the issue of slavery, California had to make a compromise in order to become a state. It was called The Compromise of 1850, to please Northerner's they admitted Cali as a free state and to please the South they proposed a new Fugitive Slave Law.
Around this time, many southern states were seriously considering a succesion which is the formal withdrawal of a state from the Union. Many people from the North hated slavery, so abolitionist developed a secret network , who hid fugitive slaves. Which later became known as underground railroad. When Uncle Tom's Cabin was published, a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe it showed the horrors of slavery and how they were sold. It stirred Northern abolitionist and increased their protest against slavery. And Southeners thought it critized them and saw it as an attack on the South.
Two politicians became famous for their slavery debates, Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.
